Whatever your views on immigration reform, you need to read this unforgettable true story. Urrea illuminates all sides of this issue. He is unbiased and a truly wonderful writer. I will be reading everything he has written.

"The Devil's Highway" refers to the hot, winding, desolate, Mexico to US route that has claimed lives for hundreds of years. Author Urrea chronicles the tales of cargo, human and otherwise, that risks this highway to "El Norte". Riches, freedom, servitude and gruesome death are all in the offing. These stories stem from historical record, humanitarian workers, survivors, families, border security, and the cold evidence of each corpse. The author fairly, and believably, weaves this input into a vivid human tableaux and document. The real thing.

This book was a Pulitzer prize finalist in 2005. I have to find out and read the book that won, because this book is the best book I have read since The Warmth of Other Suns. It is a true story about a group of Mexican immigrants lost in the Arizona desert. I hope this book will be made into a movie. Urrea is outstanding in his descriptions and detail. This book is heart-wrenching.

An absolutely OUTSTANDING book and one that shows the reader just what the plight is of the potential "undocumented worker" from Mexico really is!

This book examines one border crossing into Arizona that went terribly bad and many of the men died in the harsh sun of Southern Arizona.

For anyone with an interest in the problems this country has with "undocumented workers", as I am, this book is quite fascinating to read!

An American migration story for the 21st century.
Written by a journalist, Devil's Highway is interesting, balanced and informative. It is the tragic story of those who attempted but never became illegal immigrants. As Urrea narrates the story of the migrants lost in the desert, he provides all the background that brings them across the US-Mexico borderlands. Urrea teaches much about the region, border enforcement, the failure of policy, and the social and economic forces that propel migration.
