This book was a recommendation from a elementary school teacher I highly respect and it exceeded all my expectations. There's a strong female protagonist (pure gold if you have a young daughter), the language is rich and beautiful, the plot compelling, the characters charming, the illustrations gorgeous. We read this aloud as a family and all ages found it engaging - what a literary gem.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a beautiful read in every way - kids and adults alike will disappear in the mythical world as created by Grace Lin, then reappear at the end being touched by her emotional story and timeless lesson.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is old storytelling for new ears. It is a beautiful book! Beautiful language and artwork are mirrored in the brave inner beauty of the book's protagonist, Minli. Classic Chinese tales are shared naturally through the narrative, but could easily stand alone. The small liberties the author takes with the original legends fit the tales and make them part of today's world. A great gift for book lovers, young and old, and book lovers to be. Enjoy with a cup of Dragonwell Tea.

This book has inspired amazing imaginative play and story telling for our family! "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" is a timeless tale of a courageous young girl, named Minli, nourished by folk tales who sets off an journey to change her fortune. She uncovers the value of being grateful for what you already have, not in a forceful telling you how to be kind of way, but in a gradual showing way. This story really eloquently showed my six year old daughter that wealth is not always counted in coins, and that happiness can be a choice. A gift that my bumbling explanations could not have given her and that we will treasure for years to come.

The images throughout the book are breathtaking and there a change in font between the story itself and the stories within the book told by the characters. The flow of the words was a pleasure to read aloud. There were chapters with real tension and danger. There is one character, Green Tiger, who is very ego-centric and cruel. He may frighten some readers. However, he provides an opposite for the joyous giving people Minli also meets.

I will give this book as a gift, many times over. It is truly a wonderful present to read!

Minli loves to listen to the stories her father tells her about the Old Man of the Moon and kingdoms far away. She works tirelessly next to her parents in the dirty fields near her small Chinese village, and the tales cheer her up. Minli’s mother believes that stories are a waste of time, that they only put fanciful ideas into Minli’s head, when she should be concentrating on bringing more food to the table. While Minli dreams of one day bringing prosperity to her village, Ma believes it can’t be done.

When Minli meets a magical fish who tells her how to find the Old Man of the Moon, she sets off on a journey to ask the wise man how her village can change its fortunes. Along the way she meets with many adventures, and she discovers that her father’s stories may not have been fanciful tales after all.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin is a story of belief, hope, and the desire to take action to change your life for the better. It’s also about friendship, love and wisdom. Lin weaves Minli’s story in with the old tales beautifully, and Minli’s journey unfolds gently as she travels farther from home. The accompanying illustrations enhance the story and bring it to life. I highly recommend it for mother-daughter book clubs with girls aged 9 to 14.
