I don't think there's any way to convey how much I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone, nor how quickly you should read it. Any fan of fantasy, strong heroines, star-crossed romances, teen literature or gorgeous prose should check this book out immediately. Due to the romantic tone and some mature themes concerning war and morality, I'd probably recommend this more for high school and up, though I couldn't find any specific language, violence, or sex that would have me strongly advising against younger readers. It doesn't take a bruxis to get your hands on a copy, so what are you waiting for?

I read quite a bit of young adult fiction for my job, and this stood out in a crowded field of fantasy and paranormal novels. Taylor's characters are fresh and engaging, and I was utterly captivated by her world building and the gorgeous descriptions of both reality and the fantastical. In addition, I appreciated that she clearly feels no need to talk down to teen readers, which makes the book a pleasure to read as an adult but also gives me one more reason to recommend it to members of its intended audience.

Not just five stars…one million stars, two sister moons, and two pairs of wings in flight. That’s how beautiful this book is. I hope this is a huge hit, and all the kids read it. Listen up kids, this book has everything that you’re looking for: secrets, paranormal creatures, hot guys, best friends; passionate, enduring, forbidden, love…and angst! But unlike all the rest, this one is the real thing. I can’t believe that it got through to me so much, but it really did. I think that it will be difficult for even the most committed of cynics not to be affected by this book.

This book is amazing! It was hard to put this whimsical, amazing book down. The story takes you into a different reality, making you think twice about the possibility of real, true magic(Hello, the main characters' hair grows blue!) hidden under normal (Or abnormal, too!) circumstances. It even had me throwing beads, hoping my wish on them would come true! By an author fascinated by demons and magic, this book is just amazing. I can't wait until the sequel comes out!

"Staff Pick" by ,

Laini Taylor writes more poetically than anyone I've read since Ursula K. Le Guin, without ever losing the momentum of her story — and what a fresh, evocative, and engrossing story. Taylor's characters live in a very believable world and struggle with decisions that have serious consequences. She doesn't offer much assurance that anyone will live happily ever after. But there is hope.

"Publishers Weekly Review" by , "National Book Award finalist Taylor (Lips Touch: Three Times) again weaves a masterful mix of reality and fantasy with cross-genre appeal. Exquisitely written and beautifully paced, the tale is set in ghostly, romantic Prague, where 17-year-old Karou is an art student — except when she is called 'home' to do errands for the family of loving, albeit inhuman, creatures who raised her. Mysterious as Karou seems to her friends, her life is equally mysterious to her: How did she come to live with chimaera? Why does paternal Brimstone eternally require teeth — especially human ones? And why is she 'plagued by the notion that she wasn't whole.... a sensation akin to having forgotten something?' Taylor interlaces cleverly droll depictions of contemporary teenage life with equally believable portrayals of terrifying otherworldly beings. When black handprints begin appearing on doorways throughout the world, Karou is swept into the ancient deadly rivalry between devils and angels and gradually, painfully, acquires her longed-for self-knowledge. The book's final pages seemingly establish the triumph of true love — until a horrifying revelation sets the stage for a second book. Ages 15 — up. (Sept.)"
