Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Breece D'J Pancake cut short a remarkably promising career when he took his own life in 1979 at the age of twenty-six. In 1983 the posthumous publication of this book — a collection of stories that depict, with astonishing power and grace, the world of Pancake's native rural West Virginia — electrified the literary world with a force that still resounds across two decades.

Synopsis:

Twelve stories written during a promising, abruptly ended career illuminate the lives of doomed and despairing brawlers, murderers, drunkards, and demented husbands and wives in West Virginia's mountain hollows. Reprint. 15,000 first printing.

I've read Hemingway, Updike,Highsmith,McCullers. All are great in their own respect but I have never been so moved as I was after reading this book. He has a truly seperate vision unlike any other writer I've read or have read since. If you are an avid fan of the written word and truly appreciate the art of writing I suggest you read it.
