This is a challenging book with a protagonist who initially is difficult to like. But if you stick with it, you will find a novel that has a lot to say about self-love, motherhood, forgiveness and growing up. Along the way, you will also learn a bit about the Victorian-era language of flowers and about foster children. Highly recommended.

I couldn't put this book down once I started it! It is beautifully written and gives such poignant insights into the life of a girl who was abandoned at birth and was passed along from one foster home to the next experiencing pain, lonliness, anger, abuse, ect. Working with flowers transports her into a state of self worth and allows her to see the world in a different light. I hope this author continues to write and give us something else to read because this debut novel is excellent!

The Language of Flowers is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Warning: it is a book you will not be able to put down once you begin, so allow plenty of time to indulge. The storyline is compelling as well as believable; Victoria's characterization is a perfect balance of a fragile and damaged human. Likewise, the information about the "romantic" nature and meaning of flowers is invaluable. You'll never just give a pretty bouquet again--it will be a deliberate choice of just the right flowers depending on the occasion. Enjoy the cherry blossom beauty of the book, as alas, it does end.

"Review" by , "Instantly entrancing."
"Review" by , "[An] original and brilliant first novel...a mesmerizing storyteller...I would like to hand Vanessa Diffenbaugh a bouquet of bouvardia (enthusiasm), gladiolus (you pierce my heart) and lisianthus (appreciation)....And there is one more sprig I should add to her bouquet: a single pink carnation (I will never forget you)."
"Review" by , "A captivating novel in which a single sprig of rosemary speaks louder than words...The Language of Flowers deftly weaves the sweetness of newfound love with the heartache of past mistakes....[It] will certainly change how you choose your next bouquet."
"Review" by , "Fascinating...Diffenbaugh clearly knows both the human heart and her plants, and she keeps us rooting for the damaged Victoria."
"Review" by , "Diffenbaugh effortlessly spins this enchanting tale, making even her prickly protagonist impossible not to love."
"Review" by , "Compelling...immensely engaging...unabashedly romantic...an emotional arc of almost unbearable poignance."
