About the Author

Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1925. When she died at the age of 39, America lost one of its most gifted writers at the height of her powers. O'Connor is also the author of The Violent Bear It Away (1960) and Wise Blood (1962).

"I wouldn't milk a cow to save your soul from hell."

I love this book! Within the first paragraph, or sentence even, of each story, I was helplessly hooked. I was amazed at how in such a short amount of space she was able to create these vividly wretched characters (and I loved each and every one of them, or loved to hate them, in some cases).

I can't wait to read her other works.

This collection has some of my favorite O'Connor stories. The title story is about a white woman who does not know what to do when she sees a black woman wearing the same hat as her. O'Connor often writes about college educated children coming home to their rural roots and the ways in which they are knocked off their self raised pedestals.... This collection contains several variants on that them.
