Drinking: A Love Story is about Caroline Knapp's struggle with alcoholism and getting sober after 20 years of hard drinking. This book spoke to me personally and parallels my life closely. Knapp's writing is so stark and honest that anyone in recovery will see themselves in this book.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor," a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

About the Author

Caroline Knapp was a contributor at New Woman magazine and a regular columnist at The Boston Phoenix, and her work has appeared in Mademoiselle, The New York Times, and numerous international magazines.  She is also the author of Alice K's Guide to Life and Pack of Two. Caroline Knapp died in 2002 at the age of 42.

Though this was highly recommended to me, I was hesitant to read it, expecting a Lifetime movie of a book. Instead, I found Knapp compelling and hard-edged. She laid out her sometimes harrowing story in a way that was clear, strong and never once asked for pity. It was a very fast read and so well-written that despite the devastating tale it made me wish the book were longer.

If you are struggling with your drinking, I urge you to read this book. Especially if you're a middle/upper-middle class, employed, college-educated woman. I think you'll be able to identify on a deep level. I know I did.

I know this sounds dramatic, but this book helped save my life. I bought it 4 years ago, read it in one day, then went to my first AA meeting shortly afterwards. I haven't had a drink since and my life has changed beyond what I expected.
