Publisher Comments:

He didn't intend to burn half of Berkeley to the ground, or create a media frenzy by faking his best friend's suicide, or enroll in high school dressed as an elderly Italian woman. However, he did. Nick Twisp started out an honor student and ended up a fugitive.

Youth in Revolt is the journals of Nick Twisp, California's most precocious diarist, whose ongoing struggles to make sense out of high school, deal with his divorced parents, and lose his virginity result in his transformation from an unassuming fourteen-year-old to modern youth in open revolt. As his family splinters, worlds collide, and the police block all routes out of town, Nick must cope with economic deprivation, homelessness, the gulag of the public schools, a competitive Type-A father, murderous canines (in triplicate), and an inconvenient hair trigger on his erectile response — all while vying ardently for the affections of the beauteous Sheeni Saunders, teenage goddess and ultimate intellectual goad.

He's smart, he's horny, he's resourceful, and he's on the loose. Youth in Revolt is Nick Twisp's own story.

Review:

"An unstintingly hilarious black comedy...has all the hallmarks of a classic." Los Angeles Times

I first read this book when I was in High School and it was like reading Catcher in the Rye for a newer, more cynical generation. Even as the story gets more and more absurd, Payne never loses sight of the character of Nick Twisp and his crazy antics to win over a girl. This is a truly great book.

When I began reading this I was soon reminded of another book I had read by Rob Thomas, titled "Rats Saw God". The stories have similarities in the sense that they kind of capture the not-so-innocent side of youth. Within the first few pages most would probably perceive Nick Twisp to be somewhat pretentious and precocious, but in reality, Nick Twisp is a undeniably lovable protagonist. And the use of ridiculously large words along with his lewd behavior, and erotic thoughts towards that girl he pines for make for a very entertaining literary adventure.
