Publisher Comments:

Berlin 1942

When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.

But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

What a great book, I've never read a book from the Nazi point of view much less a Nazi child. It just reminded me of how truly innocent children can be and how children don't see color or race they just see good people and good friends. I cried so much at the end and my heart broke but it was a good read and I'd read it again!

I'm disappointed that this book won an award; compared to The Book Thief, another book that deals with the Holocaust, it is barely worth reading. There is a key plot manipulation that takes place in order to bring about the climax of the story as well as the ending; this toying with the readers' emotions is a cheap trick. Sorry, not impressed.
