I'm haunted by this book, which I first read more than 20 years ago. Often painful and difficult to read, it tells us the truth about our society through imagining a dystopian world in the near future. A future that seems much nearer now than 20 years ago, by the way.

Lessing uses beautiful imagery and well-drawn characters to show us the often all-too-painful truth of ourselves. She deserves that Nobel Prize!
