Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

An omnibus edition of three counterculture classics by Richard Brautigan that embody the spirit of the 1960s

Trout Fishing in America is by turns a hilarious, playful, and melancholy novel that wanders from San Francisco through America's rural waterways; In Watermelon Sugar expresses the mood of a new generation, revealing death as a place where people travel the length of their dreams, rejecting violence and hate; and The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster is a collection of nearly 100 poems, first published in 1968.

Synopsis:

A Brautigan omnibus, reissued in paperback in celebration of its twentieth anniversary, this one-volume edition includes three contemporary classics that embody the spirit of the 1960s.

Synopsis:

Required reading for the hip generation, this one-volume edition contains two novels and a collection of poetry. The comic genius and iconoclastic vision of American life will recapture today's reader.

About the Author

Richard Brautigan's comic genius and countercultural vision of American life made him a literary idol of the 1960s and early 1970s. He wrote ten novels, nine volumes of poetry, and a collection of short stories entitled REVENGE OF THE LAWN. His books became required reading for the beat generation, and TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA sold more than two million copies throughout the world. Brautigan committed suicide in 1984 at the age of fourty-nine.

This is an excellent collection of writing by 'the last of the beats'. I'm reading copy of trout fishing in america I got the library, but I would love this collection. It's nice to have everything in one place, you know. In Watermelon Sugar is an outstanding read, so simplistic in style but incredibly powerful, like all of his writing. Things arn't what they used to be. See you at the forgotten works?

While this may be the 20'th anniversary of this edition, it is well to recall that this anthology was published 43 years ago in hard copy that I still have after moving many times around this huge country. More tellingly, it is one of the few fiction books that remain in the short-term memory zone after 50 years of reading and one of very, very few I ever re-read with great joy. Yum, white bread samwiches with "dandelion wine. . .all in watermelon sugar. .mayonnaise". This is what west coast hippies read!
