Synopsis:

It's 11pm on Millennium Eve. The ancient clown, Scaramouche Jones, has given his last performance and waits in his dressing room for the stroke of midnight - and his own centenary. Reflecting on the fortunes of his life, his journey spans the 20th century in his quest for a father and a homeland.

I have just returned from Edinburgh where I attended a performance of Scaramouche Jones, performed by the playwright.

Against the backdrop of the 20th century, Scaramouche enacts a life of pain, loss, adventure, triumph and search for identity. The century and its significant events are chronicled through the eyes of Scaramouche, the orphaned illegitimate son of a gypsy whore.

I was intensely moved by this stunning piece of theatre. The story was compelling and the performance was poignant, funny, tragic and singularly captivating. I was swept along in the tidal wave of his journeys, his lives, his masks and his final curtain, descending as the millennium rockets herald the 21st century.

Two days on, I am still processing the immense impact of this story and the images which remain with me of this stunning theatrical spectacle.
