The Date: 1924
The Setting: Vermont
Amongst the many interesting and emotionally conflicted characters that exist in this story, the most memorable are 6 yr. old Esther Hirsh and her best friend, 12 yr. old Leanora Sutter. In the time when the Ku Klux Klan was attempting to dominate a small town in Vermont, the non-members of the KKK were determined to find a way to bring peace and diversity back into their community. Esther is a young Jewish girl who is strong willed and has the heart of an angel. Her childhood innocence is what takes the reader to a place of serenity in a time of emotional and social upheaval. Leanora is a young, black girl whom has a close attachment to Esther. They are a source of comfort for each other and they are not afraid to show the compassion they share for one another. Although Leanora saves Esther from an untimely death, the threats from the KKK to move out of town do not cease and her family's freedom is still at risk. This story takes a realistic look at the lives of members of the KKK and the victims of their 'ultimate' power.
