Powells.com Staff Pick
Since I found Funke's work two years ago, she has become one of my favorite children's fantasy writers. Her award-winning debut novel (in English translation), The Thief Lord, was followed by Inkheart and even a children's picture book, Princess Knight — each story very different but equally very good. One reason: Cornelia Funke never talks down to her target audience, using agile language and a breadth of vocabulary (a success partly due to her excellent translator). Dragon Rider is no exception to the rule — it's a fast and exceptionally fun read, and comes highly recommended by both my son and me. Carla, Powells.com

Publisher Comments:
When their peaceful valley is threatened with danger, Firedrake, a silver-skinned dragon, and his sidekick, Sorrel, set off to find the mythical Rim of Heaven — the only place in the world where dragons can be safe forever. Along the way they meet an orphaned boy named Ben who volunteers to be their navigator and quickly becomes their friend. But when they learn that an evil dragon hunter is on their trail, their quest quickly turns into a battle for survival. As the adventure draws to a breathtaking close, it soon becomes clear that one person's fate will decide the destiny of them all.
Once again, master storyteller Cornelia Funke casts an enchanting spell, creating an exciting, heartwarming, and ultimately trimphant tale about the power of belief and the true meaning of home.

This book was truly work of magic. It's about a young boy, who meets a dragon. Little did he know that he was about to embark on a dangerous adventure, and find out the prophcey of the Dragon Rider, was about him. Cornelia Funke has such a vivid imagination, that everyone can't help but love, and cherish. When you turn a page, it crinkles slightly, inviting you into a world of adventure. It is written cleverly, and light. The words flow together like a powerful mudflow, keeping you on the edge of your seat, waiting for more. This book has the most common magical creatures, like dragons, brownies, and dragon riders, but yet it is not like other magical books. Dragon Rider is unique in it's own way, it's one of those books that you don't come pass everyday, and if you do, you want to hold on to it forever, and read it over and over again.

Cornelia Funke truly has the gift of storytelling. Her story instantly captured me into her magical world of dragons, dragonriders, brownies, evil powers and love. Though this book might seem like a children's story at first, this must be read by people of all ages who want simply to read an original magical story.

I thought only a child can honor this book but when I scan the first pages I couldn't take my eyes off and I went from page 1 to the next and next... I was fascinated on how Cornelia Funke used the simple but BIG words to envelope readers into the dragon rider's world.
I hope there's a second chapter on the life of the dragon rider ... :)
