Bethany Moreton: IMG Culture War on Aisle 5? Wal-Mart, Evangelicals, and "Extreme Capitalism"

"In the 'culture wars' narrative of the Republican ascendancy, this slippage represents the greatest con in recent history: while you rush to defend marriage or protect the unborn, please pay no attention to the financier behind the curtain." Continue »

I Have a Little Dreidel

by Maxie Baum and Julie Paschkis

I Have a Little Dreidel Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay,

And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play!

It's time for Hanukkah, and Hanukkah is a time for family. This reasonably priced hardcover picture book features the classic holiday dreidel song, with extra rhyming verses added on. We see the family gathering at a child's house, mama and child working together to make latkes (a classic Hanukkah treat), the family lighting the menorah, and then a spirited game of dreidel. The game is described in easy-to-follow language so that children can follow along and play at home themselves!

Review:

"The popular Jewish tune gets a heartfelt makeover, thanks to Baum's new lyrics and Paschkis's (Yellow Elephant) cheery, mural-like pictures in this paper-over-board volume. While the original song focuses on the title top, Baum casts a wider net, devoting several verses to the joys of an extended family's latke-making and eating ('The cousins grate potatoes;/ That's what we like to do — / We mix matzo and some onions,/ Then add an egg or two'). Decorated with traditional Jewish motifs, the flattened-perspective tableaux offer an idealized, low-tech evocation of modern family life. The kids play dreidel while a couple dances to music performed by two other family members, and there's nary a TV, Gameboy or Hanukkah present in sight. Young celebrants will likely take comfort in this homey articulation of Jewish tradition and continuity. Ages 3-5." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)
