A boy's coming of age with a spiritual bent. Touching, suspenseful, moments of laughter and joy. This is the second time I've read it. I listened to it this time and really enjoyed it. Great reader!

A masterful tale focused on the growth and maturity of young Antonio, Bless Me, Ultima will quickly have readers questioning their own faith and belief system. As Antonio is forced to choose between the power of God, the golden carp and nature, he forms his own belief systems from those around him. While Ultima guides Antonio on his quest for knowledge and maturity, Antonio realizes that he does not have to take a definite standpoint-he can find the middle ground and balance his own life by himself.

Anaya has shared a true gift in this story. Antonio is a young boy who develops a relationship with Ultima, a curandera who comes to live with his family. He is witness to multiple tragedies at a young age, but learns how to face them with the strength of Ultima. He is conflicted throughout by the Catholic God and the powers of nature through which Ultima works. I like that the author wove in World War II to place the story in time and to establish the fact that it takes place on American soil.

"Synopsis" by , A masterpiece of Hispanic literature from "one of the nation's foremost Chicano literary artists" (Denver Post). This is the involving story of Antonio, a boy facing the conflicts in his life with the help of Ultima, a curandera who cures with herbs and magic. At each turn of Tony's life, she is there to nurture his soul.

"Synopsis" by , Stories filled with wonder and the haunting beauty of his culture have helped make Rudolfo Anaya the father of Chicano literature in English, and his tales fairly shimmer with the lyric richness of his prose. Acclaimed in both Spanish and English, Anaya is perhaps best loved for his classic bestseller ... Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will test the bonds that tie him to his people, and discover himself in the pagan past, in his father's wisdom, and in his mother's Catholicism. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world-and will nurture the birth of his soul.
