Wow. If you love science fiction (or even if you don't), you should read this book. It's actually a trilogy, about a post-apocalyptic Earth on which the remnant of humanity is saved (or exploited?) by a race of genetic-engineering aliens. Is humanity inevitably doomed to destroy itself? Are we an inherently hierarchical people? What does it mean to be "human?" If you're intrigued by these questions, or you just would like, for once, to read something feminist AND entertaining, pick up "Lilith's Brood."

I have had a hard time transitioning from Young Adult fantasy and sci-fi, into Adult, this book was wonderful. A few years ago I discovered Fledgling, and now recommend that to all my vampire loving friends. This trilogy, conveniently in one book so i didnt have to stop, was great. Lilith is a great female protagonist, with strong emotions, who really knows herself, or thinks she does. the Oankali are a complex society, and you learn more about them every chapter.

I haven't enjoyed a science fiction book so much in years. This is actually three books in one volume, and there's everything you could ever want from good science fiction -- post-apocalyptic fragility of the human race, tentacly aliens, and human-alien cross breeding. Definitely a good read, I pretty much stopped doing any other liesure activity while I was reading this book.

"Review" by , "Octavia E. Butler is one of the finest voices in fiction — period....A master storyteller."
"Review" by , "The themes...that suffuse Lilith's Brood clearly parallel the experience of American blacks during slavery, and these are the racial memories Butler draws upon to describe how truly wise, heroic, difficult, and ultimately successful accommodationist politics can be."
"Review" by , "Superb...challenging and visionary....A classic."
"Review" by , "Shows the author at the height of her imaginative and writing powers."
"Review" by , "Butler in top form...spare, vivid prose...intriguing, well-developed ideas, solid characters, and crisp narrative."
"Review" by , "She is one of those rare authors who pay serious attention to the way human beings actually work together and against each other, and she does so with extraordinary plausibility."
"Synopsis" by , For the first time, Butler's gripping trilogy — Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago — is presented in one omnibus. Butler, a Hugo and Nebula award-winner, relates the story of an alien race that comes to Earth after a nuclear holocaust and merges genetically with the human survivors.
