The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect — a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive, KLady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.
A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follet's historical masterpiece.

Historical novel of England in the time of Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury. It depicts the arrogance of those in power, and the resistance of the people who fight for justice.

When a friend described this book to me, I was not sure that I would enjoy it. And the size of the book intimidated me from beginning to read. While recuperating from surgery, I began to read it. I know this sounds cliche' but I could not put it down! In spite of the size, I finished it in three days. I think this was surprisingly one the best books that I have ever read! And everyone that I have recommended it to agrees with me.
