Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect — a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive, KLady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follet's historical masterpiece.

I want to be Prior Phillip. This epic has it all and it is so ngrossing that you don't want to put it down. Ken Follett has really out done himself. Good and evil at it's best!

I must be in the minority of not really enjoying this book. For one thing, it is too big and causes pain in your hands and arms after holding it for ten minutes. Perhaps it could have been two continuing books.I also felt it was also too drawn out. That said, on the other hand, there were many wonderful parts. Especially the birth of John's baby.

I loved this book. The interpersonal relationships and sub-plots make the historical era come alive for the reader. William is a character that the reader loves to hate; while Phillip makes you proud. All the characters have the human element of being fully developed, well-rounded, dynamic individuals who seem to come alive on the page. I am American, but have been to Britain twice, and now I really want to go again to see Lincoln.
