This is one of the best historical novels ever written. It contains a wonderful ensemble cast of characters intertwined with real historical figures. Their stories and how they relate to each other make for an epic read that will stay with the reader forever.

Historical novel of England in the time of Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury. It depicts the arrogance of those in power, and the resistance of the people who fight for justice.

When a friend described this book to me, I was not sure that I would enjoy it. And the size of the book intimidated me from beginning to read. While recuperating from surgery, I began to read it. I know this sounds cliche' but I could not put it down! In spite of the size, I finished it in three days. I think this was surprisingly one the best books that I have ever read! And everyone that I have recommended it to agrees with me.

This book is extremely well written and I enjoyed it immensely. I wish that it had not sat on my bookshelf for 2 years, being afraid to start a 1000+ page novel. I simply could not put the book down once I started reading it and was sad when I finished it. Definitely one to re-read. I have read other Follett novels, but none hold a candle to this one.
