Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Paretsky returns with her heroine V.I. Warshawski in this New York Times bestseller, deemed "a complex, disturbing thriller" by the Associated Press. This is a story of secrets and betrayals that stretch across four generations — secrets that are political, social, sexual, financial, and all of them with the power to kill.

Review:

"Paretsky emphasizes the political but doesn't neglect the personal here: a compelling tale of secrets that can't stay buried." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Paretsky reminds us that although victims change, prejudice is still alive and all too well. With this top-notch offering, she earns another vote of confidence for V.I." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"[A] stellar entry in a celebrated series, which offers a provocative history lesson....A tightly woven and thoughtful thriller, this enticing mix of history and mystery showcases sharp, clever, vulnerable V. I. at her best." Booklist

Review:

"This may be Paretsky's most complex novel to date. It will have particular resonance post-9/11, as readers recognize more easily what it was like for past generations to live in fear. Highly recommended." Library Journal

Review:

"[A] thoughtful, high-tension mystery....Whatever your views on those subjects [of political dissent and national security], this is a provocative mystery that should prompt you to examine them more rigorously." Washington Post Book World

Review:

"In addition to being a first-class mystery, Blacklist contains subtle warnings about the loss of freedoms and is a reminder of how absolute power can corrupt and destroy the freedoms it is meant to protect." Orlando Sentinel

Review:

"[O]ne of the most intricately plotted Warshawsky novels to date....Blacklist shines, thanks to the depth of Paretsky's research into the times and her passion for both Warshawsky and this world....[This series] has reached a new peak." Rocky Mountain News

Review:

"There are some odd things about this book, not science-fiction strange, but strange enough to make much of the action ludicrous....With its murky plot, surprisingly ditzy heroine and multitudinous goofy moments, Blacklist may be the black sheep of the Warshawski series." Chicago Sun-Times

Review:

"[B]ecause she is still among the very best drivers of narrative engines in the business, Paretsky...has produced a genuinely exciting and disturbing thriller, a raging vehicle that can carry a load of baggage...without missing a beat." Chicago Tribune

Review:

"Paretsky has an affinity for solid storytelling with a social agenda without sacrificing plot....Blacklist doesn't miss a beat as the author carefully shapes her characters while molding a plot that accelerates." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Review:

"Perpetrating hooptedoodle. That's all I could think of as I read...paragraph after paragraph of earnest but dull prose in Blacklist....'Perpetrating hooptedoodle' is writer Elmore Leonard's description of what writers do when they bore readers." Cleveland Plain Dealer

Review:

"[W]ith so much sermonizing, Blacklist comes across mostly as a medium for expressing Paretsky's own socio-political views. This turns an otherwise intriguing whodunit into a diatribe on civil liberties, and that is unfortunate." Dallas-Ft. Worth Star Telegram

Review:

"Sara Paretsky wrote the book, so to speak, on putting a woman squarely in the world of tough-cookie private eyes." Seattle Times

Paretsky's books are always a compelling read, but this one is even more so. In these times when a new kind of blacklisting is a real threat, it's also a cautionary tale, superimposed on the gloss of the murder mystery.

She intelligently interweaves tangled layers, approaching her subject matter not just from Point A to B, but allowing the necessary tangets of A1 to A10 and lots more footnoted plotlines in-between.

She is also always contemporary, throwing a paragraph into the plot that quickly condemns what needs to be. For example, when she needs to buy a quick outfit change & some other sleuthing materials, she visits a certain megastore & buys it all for less than $30. She lays it on the line--of course it's made by slave labor. How could it not be, at those prices. But we conveniently ignore the truths we want to for convenience. Thank God Paretsky is there to remind our conscience not to!
