Very enjoyable story. I looked forward to the day ending so I could get to this book and read late into the evening.

A very well-written book about Judd Altman and his estranged family when his father dies. His father's last dying wish was that the family gets together to sit Shiva, a seven day period used to mourn the recently departed. This book was both hilarious and heartbreaking, I recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

I liked this book more than any fiction book I've read in a couple of years. It is darkly humorous but at the same time sensitive and at times heart wrenching. I didn't want the book to end because I had become so involved with all of the characters that I wanted to go home with all of them to find out what happened next in their lives. This was the first of Tropper's books I had read but I will be reading all of his books as soon as I can.

While there are many books that make me smile, or perhaps chuckle inwardly, This Is Where I Leave You had me laughing out loud constantly, sometimes even snorting or guffawing amongst strangers. Jonathan Tropper's dysfunctional family sitting Shiva for their father while trying to negotiate years of feuds, misunderstandings and sibling grudges, never loses sight of the fact despite everything, family is family and that surprisingly, they love and might even like each other. But on top of that, every character is dealing with the an almost over the top but still somehow believable crisis of their own, the threads of each subplot getting tangled in the general mess of the family with unpredictable results. Tropper's quick-witted but sad-sack narrator, Judd Foxmann, manages to screw up in the ways that make you laugh because you realize how easily you could be him (although maybe not so quick with the clever retorts). This book was so much fun I immediately read two more by the same author, with nearly matching results in the snorting department.

"Staff Pick" by ,

When Judd's father dies, he joins his family for a week to observe shivah. Meanwhile, in the face of his wife's affair and a divorce on his horizon, he discovers his wife is pregnant. This doesn't much sound like a funny book, but it truly is. Tropper has the amazing ability to write both poignantly and hilariously at the same time; he seems to be able to untangle, and capture, the pathos and levity in life.

"Review" by , "Often sidesplitting, mostly heartbreaking...[Tropper is] a more sincere, insightful version of Nick Hornby, that other master of male psyche."
"Review" by , "In a wry domestic tone nicely akin to Tom Perotta's, Mr. Tropper...introduces a darkly entertaining bunch of dysfunctional relatives....This author's strong suit is wisecracks, the more irreverent the better."
"Review" by , "Hilarious and often heartbreaking...a novel that charms by allowing for messes, loose ends and the reality that there's only one sure ending for everyone."
"Review" by , "[A] magnificently funny family saga.... Read and weep with laughter. Grade: A"
"Review" by , "The novel is artful and brilliant, filled with colorful narratives and witty dialogue...[Tropper] can find the funny in any situation."
"Review" by , "Tender and unexpectedly hilarious."
"Review" by , "Jonathan Tropper is a genius."
"Review" by , "Jonathan Tropper is the new breed of novelist who writes for men and women with ease and grace."
"Synopsis" by , The death of Judd Foxman's father marks the first time that the entire Foxman clan has congregated in years. There is, however, one conspicuous absence: Judd's wife, Jen, whose affair with his radio shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public. Simultaneously mourning the demise of his father and his marriage, Judd joins his dysfunctional family as they reluctantly sit shiva — and spend seven days and nights under the same roof. The week quickly spins out of control as longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed and old passions are reawakened. Then Jen delivers the clincher: she's pregnant.

This Is Where I Leave You is Jonathan Tropper's most accomplished work to date, and a riotously funny, emotionally raw novel about love, marriage, divorce, family, and the ties that bind — whether we like it or not.
