Hilarious, heartbreaking, poignant. Jonathan Tropper puts his finger on these seemingly tiny little things most people overlook. And those funny, awkward moments most people avert their eyes from? He wrote about them. And he did it well. It just occurred to me - he might be the John Cusack of authors. Or the Lena Dunham. Even though she's coming out with a book soon too. Anyway, this is my favorite Jonathan Tropper book. It's deliciously human.

So funny. So real. The one book this year that I didn't just tell people I loved, but immediately lent out to people as well.

I had never heard of Mr. Tropper before I read this book. I was scrolling through staff picks on this site and came across it. The only thing that immediately jumped out at me was the title. It had a somber presence to it and I was unable to skip past it. It was the best decision that I have made all year. I read the book in one sitting, which I rarely do because I have a horrid case of bipolar disorder. This book was a calm in the storm and I couldn't rip my eyes from the pages. What kind of an author can make you tear up and laugh your rear end off in one chapter? A great author, that's who. As soon as I finished this book, I located Mr. Tropper's website and went on a bookstore hunt for the rest of his novels. I have read two more since and they are equally delectable. I cannot stress this enough: Buy it, check it out at the library, download it onto your Kobi...ANYTHING. Just start your new year off with amazing literature.

This is one of the funniest, laugh-out-loud books that I have read in a long time! I'd not heard of Jonathan Tropper, but this book was recommended by a friend and I thought, "why not." Little did I know that there would be hilarity and insight into family dysfunction when I entered the world of the Foxman family through the eyes of son Judd. This family is grieving the loss of the patriarch and are to sit shiva for a week. This "time out," if you will, gives Judd plenty of time to reflect on his family, failures and hopes. Tropper creates three dimensional characters that are so real, I wonder if they are fully drawn from the people around him. The tale is not just funny - it is sad and enlightening as well about human behavior and the individuals who comprise a family. Of course, after reading "This is Where I Leave You," I will now delve in to all of Tropper's books.

"Staff Pick" by ,

When Judd's father dies, he joins his family for a week to observe shivah. Meanwhile, in the face of his wife's affair and a divorce on his horizon, he discovers his wife is pregnant. This doesn't much sound like a funny book, but it truly is. Tropper has the amazing ability to write both poignantly and hilariously at the same time; he seems to be able to untangle, and capture, the pathos and levity in life.

"Review" by , "Often sidesplitting, mostly heartbreaking...[Tropper is] a more sincere, insightful version of Nick Hornby, that other master of male psyche."
"Review" by , "In a wry domestic tone nicely akin to Tom Perotta's, Mr. Tropper...introduces a darkly entertaining bunch of dysfunctional relatives....This author's strong suit is wisecracks, the more irreverent the better."
"Review" by , "Hilarious and often heartbreaking...a novel that charms by allowing for messes, loose ends and the reality that there's only one sure ending for everyone."
"Review" by , "[A] magnificently funny family saga.... Read and weep with laughter. Grade: A"
"Review" by , "The novel is artful and brilliant, filled with colorful narratives and witty dialogue...[Tropper] can find the funny in any situation."
"Review" by , "Tender and unexpectedly hilarious."
"Review" by , "Jonathan Tropper is a genius."
"Review" by , "Jonathan Tropper is the new breed of novelist who writes for men and women with ease and grace."
"Synopsis" by , The death of Judd Foxman's father marks the first time that the entire Foxman clan has congregated in years. There is, however, one conspicuous absence: Judd's wife, Jen, whose affair with his radio shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public. Simultaneously mourning the demise of his father and his marriage, Judd joins his dysfunctional family as they reluctantly sit shiva — and spend seven days and nights under the same roof. The week quickly spins out of control as longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed and old passions are reawakened. Then Jen delivers the clincher: she's pregnant.

This Is Where I Leave You is Jonathan Tropper's most accomplished work to date, and a riotously funny, emotionally raw novel about love, marriage, divorce, family, and the ties that bind — whether we like it or not.
