Publisher Comments:

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CULTURES continues with the features that have made it the best-selling text for the intercultural communication course. The new edition of this leading gives students an understanding and appreciation of different cultures and helps them develop practical skills for improving their communication with people from other cultures. It's renowned for being the only text on the market to consistently emphasize religion and history as key variables in intercultural communication. Packed with the latest research and filled with numerous, compelling examples that force students to examine their own assumptions and cultural biases, this book helps students understand the subtle and profound ways culture affects communication. The book is divided into four interrelated parts: Part I introduces the study of communication and culture; Part II focuses on the ability of culture to shape and modify our view of reality; Part III puts the theory of intercultural communication into practice; and Part IV converts knowledge into action.

Book News Annotation:

Believing that all communication involves action, and that cultural competence is required if any communication can take place in a global context, the authors of this undergraduate introductory text concentrate on communication amongst international cultures and communication amongst domestic co-cultures in the US. They describe the challenges of intercultural communication, the deep structure of culture and how it causes people to view reality, differing ideas about life and death, alternate views of reality, nonverbal communication, becoming culturally competent, and cultural influences on the contexts of business, education, and health care. The authors have completely updated their material on intercultural communication and contexts and have added new chapters on cultural identification and the role of religion, advice on the use of language. They have also updated information to reflect current events and trends in Asia and the Middle East.

This book while very informative in some respects is terribly frustrating to read. It is quite simply a textbook filled with an overwhelming amount of quotes that quickly puts the reader in to a state of self inflicted mental agony. Reading this book has been one of the most tedious reads to date. I understand that most textbooks have the potential to be boring, but the non-stop, amateur college written feel literally pin-points the area of the brain that allows humans to have motivation and grinds it in to a mush like, baby food textured substance.

My speech professor used 'Communication Between Cultures' as the main textbook . I found this text to be very informative, and it gave the students a lot of great dicussion topics. I am now recommending this text to my sociology professor.
