This book is sad and terrifying and utterly engrossing. As a nursing student with a strong interest in maternity (I plan to go on to be a midwife), I found this book to be an excellent and informative read. I would highly recommend it to anyone planning to have a baby. If doctors aren't going to follow their Hippocratic oath, it's important for consumers to educate themselves, and this book is a great place to start.

BRAVO!!!!!!!! It is about time someone sheds the light and reveals the TRUTH....I am an OB nurse and a childbirth educator. This book couldn't be more true. What has happened to us? How embarrassing for the United States to handle maternity and newborn care so poorly. SHAME ON US!!! Thank you for publishing this book....I would love to have one on hand at our birthing center. Could I get a copy?

Product details 305 pages University of California Press - English 9780520245969 Reviews:
"Review" by , "Dr. Wagner depicts the state of obstetrical care in the United States with clarity and accuracy. He is clearly an 'insider' who has the courage to tell the truth about how our love affair with birth technology adversely affects both mothers and babies. Importantly, he outlines a path toward much-needed change. Born in the USA should be 'must' reading, not only for all pregnant women, but also for all ob/gyn physicians, hospital personnel, and those who make public policy. Dr. Wagner has done all of us a great service with this book."
"Review" by , "Speaking from his experience as a clinical perinatologist and a perinatal epidemiologist and supplemented by the hoard of credible sources cites in the copious endnotes, Wagner pulls no punches in advocating a woman's right to control the entire reproductive process, from conception through birth." (starred review)
"Review" by , "I highly recommend this lucid, authoritative analysis of the state of maternity care in the U.S."
