My 13-year-old daughter was so very excited about Maggie Stiefvater's "Raven Boys" that she urged me, on countless occasions, to pick up this first title in the trilogy. While I've read many of her recommendations, this one has been among her best selections for us both. "The Raven Boys" is a cleverly concocted, fictional work of art that intertwines psychics and magic with prep school boys and an everyday girl. Friendships are formed, journeys undertaken, young love explored and questions about the psychic world left for readers to consider.

The story is compelling and artfully presented. A fun, picturesque read that had me revisiting turns of phrase and conversations before I'd completed the book. Definitely a must-read for teens and adults who enjoy magical possibilities.

Sensitive readers should be aware there is quite a bit of very foul language throughout the book, and matter that may not be appropriate for younger readers. It was a stretch for my 13 year old. Had I read it first, she would have been waiting another couple of years to get it in her hot little hands.

The book an it's characters was amazing! Blue an her crazy, loving, disfunctionally perfect family makes all the crazy every family goes though seem wonderfully normal. Blue as a psychics daughter is used to the strange but learning that she enhanceses all supernatural things helps make Seneca of all the crazy that happens in this book. Gansey is a boy well beyond his age and us the amazing glue that hold his band of unique friends together an makes them more as a collected whole then the wonderful peices they are separate. Ronan is hard edged but so full of surprised and is fiercely loyal to those who are around him, making him a wonderful character even if he is an ass. Noah is the friend who, while quite an frogetable in a situation is important to all who know him an love him. Adam, while an undisputed part of the group must work threw many personal issues before he's as wonderfully love able as many of the rest of the group. Over all this book is sad, intriguing, and wonderfully funny and I can't wait to see where it's headed :)

Wow. I absolutely loved this!!! I've read, and really liked, Stiefvater's The Wolves of Mercy Falls series, but The Raven Boys far surpasses any of the books in that trilogy for me. Stiefvater's unique and at times poetic writing is at it's best in this. The story moves along at a nice clip and I enjoyed every moment reading it. I was so entertained by all of the characters that I can't even pick a favorite; they all play a part in the brilliance of the story. This is magical, mysterious, imaginative, and unexpected. I'm rarely surprised by a plot turn in a book, but Stiefvater threw multiple twists in this that I never saw coming. I don't even want to contemplate how long it will be before the next book in the Raven Cycle is released. While I'm waiting, I'll be reading The Scorpio Races and re-reading this. Awesome book! 5 stars.

Basically this: THE RAVEN BOYS is a very good book. Yes, it's the first in a quartet, and no, the second book isn't out yet, but Maggie Stiefvater is an author worth trusting. (Heck, any author who can completely convince me of the existence of monster faery horses - THE SCORPIO RACES - is an author worth trusting.) And, for all this book's title suggests that it's about a group of boys, the story contains a really beautiful community of women, the kind that left me wanting to share this book with my women friends for that reason alone. I wouldn't let the somewhat improbable-seeming premise deter you (King Arthur? In Virginia??) - for me, anyway, Stiefvater made it work so well I want to tromp around in the woods myself and find some ley-lines. I look forward to Book 2.

"Review" by , "Stiefvater not only weaves a suspenseful tale...but she also does so stylishly, with sly social commentary....This first in a planned four-novel series draws readers into a world where time enfolds hauntingly, and magic informs reality."
"Review" by , "[A] well-paced neo-Gothic thriller about a teenage fivesome's search for the supernatural...and themselves....Stiefvater, who has an assured and entertaining way with language, doesn't talk down to her readers, and she ably blends the mystical and the earthly, the primitive and the contemporary in a way that brings to mind the work of John Bellairs, J. K. Rowling, Lois Duncan and Stephenie Meyer."
"Review" by , "Haunting, distinctly individual characters are at the forefront....Hopes, fears, quirks, and forebodings gather gradually, coalescing as living portraits. It's a tour de force of characterization, and while there is no lack of event or mystery, it is the way Stiefvater's people live in the reader's imagination that makes this such a memorable read."
"Review" by , "Simultaneously complex and simple, compulsively readable, marvelously wrought. The only flaw is that this is Book 1; it may be months yet before Book 2 comes out. The magic is entirely pragmatic; the impossible, extraordinarily true."
"Review" by , "First in a planned quartet, The Raven Boys is an incredibly rich and unique tale, a supernatural thriller of a different flavor. The cinematic feel paces the novel well, and the many pieces of the story unfold with grace. The complicated relationships between the Raven boys and Blue are not of the standard main character/love interest variety and makes the curious plot all the more enthralling. Fans have been salivating for Stiefvater's next release and The Raven Boys delivers."
