Publisher Comments:

This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love. Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear.

A natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind. To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly--she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.

This story, is by far, the best one I have ever read. I tried to read it as a young teenager, but coulnd't really get into it. When I became about seventeen, and more mature, I couldn't put the book down. I have also read the Valley of the Horses, the second sequel to this first book, but none are as good as this one. I have yet to read the third and fourth book of this series, but I am looking forward to it, and wish I had a copy of this book, because I could read it over and over again!

Reading this book you feel like being plunged into another world; you can see the prehistoric jungle, the vast flora and fauna, the great beasts and brutality. The premise hinges on the idea that two early races briefly co-existed: Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon man. Auel portrays Neaderthals as being short, swarthy, dull and brutal, whereas the Cro-Magnon are tall, blonde, blue-eyed, intelligent and open-minded. The story is centered on the conflicts caused by their differences. A young Cro-Magnon child named Ayla is orphaned during an earthquake. She is found and adopted by a group of Neaderthals. As Ayla grows and matures, her differences become unmistakable. She challenges the authority of all the powerful men in the clan, friends and foes alike, simply by being a woman who is smarter than they are. Eventually her defiance of the Clan's way of life reaches a crisis, and they must decide whether to allow her to remain with them (and take advantage of her skills) or throw her out and rid themselves of the threat she poses. In spite of some unrealistic scenes, this book is full of rich descriptions. The wealth of detailed information on herbal lore, weapon making, cooking methods and other survival skills of primitive man are very interesting. There are many strong themes present in The Clan of the Cave Bear. Survival, acceptance, and what it means to be true to yourself. More than anything else, it is a story about human nature, the dynamics of power, and the strength of courage and love in the face of betrayal.
