In this two-part radio presentation of the acclaimed 2001 Stratford production of Shakespeare's classic, Bassanio, an impoverished Venetian, is determined to go to Belmont to woo the heiress Portia. To do so, he needs to borrow 3,000 ducats from his friend Antonio, the merchant, who in turn, has to borrow from the usurer Shylock, Angered by past insults from Antonio, Shylock agrees to the loan on the condition that Antonio must forfeit a pound of flesh if he should default. When news arrives that Antonio's merchant fleet, bearing his entire fortune in cargo, has been lost at sea, Portia must come to the rescue.
