Publisher Comments:

Beloved and bestselling Rumpole is back to solve a new and peculiar mystery

Anti-Social Behavior Orders, commonly known as ASBOs, are the New Labour government's pride and joy. A child who plays or even loiters in an unfriendly street can, on the complaint of neighbors, have an ASBO slapped on him. If he offends again he'll be found in breach of his ASBO and thrown in jail without a trial. All this, of course, raises the wrath of everyone's favorite barrister Horace Rumpole when he is called upon to defend a Timson child who has earned an ASBO for playing soccer on a posh street.

As Rumpole tries to get to the bottom of it all, his fellow barristers in chambers decide to highlight the ridiculousness of ASBOs by citing Rumpole for bringing food and his beloved wine into his room, and for causing global warming by lighting small cigars. Another witty tale sure to please the legions of Rumpole fans who eagerly await each new installment.

Review:

"At the start of Mortimer's winning new novella to feature Horace Rumpole (after 2006's Rumpole and the Reign of Terror), the quirky English barrister agrees to defend 12-year-old Peter Timson, who's been served with an 'Anti-social Behaviour Order' (ASBO) for playing soccer in the streets of a posh London neighborhood. Later, Rumpole takes on a more serious case: a shy civil servant, Graham Wetherby, stands accused of murdering a prostitute, an illegal Russian immigrant. Since Wetherby prefers to be represented by a 'QC' or Queens Counsel, Rumpole schemes to become a QC in an amusing subplot. Rumpole fans will cheer the barrister's vigorous defense of his clients as well as his cutting comments on the nanny state that gives rise to laws like ASBOs. As always, the character of Rumpole overshadows the mystery solving: his hedonistic pleasure in food and drink, his acerbic, manipulative wit and his love for the legal underdog. Wife Hilda — 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' — narrates the occasional chapter to great comic effect." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Another fun short novel featuring Rumpole, defender of the Magna Carta, etc. If you haven't read any Rumpole, I would go back to Mortimer's earlier work. I am not giving this Rumpole's usual 5 stars as I felt there are slight character inconsistencies in this one, but overall a good social satire, as usual.
