i might not be here if it wasn't for pearl s. buck. she was instrumental in bringing my mother over from korea and introducing my grandparents to her. my mom barely remembers her. the pictures of the two of them together are faded and worn. i have a two month old daughter. the only blood relative to my mother aside from my two sisters and i. my mother knows nothing of her birth parents. now i have undertaken the mission of searching for my biological grandparents. and. writing about it as i go. pearl s. buck is an intergral part of the story. and, i thank her for inspiration, and for her compassion. if it wasn't for the good earth. my journey may have never began.

The moving story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-lan, in which the author presents a graphic view of a China when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings for ordinary people. It is a universal tale about the destiny of man.
