Quite an amazing read, even though I did not have particularly high expectations going in. In what almost any other book would take 600 pages to cover, this does in less than 260. A ton of heady concepts are covered or at least brought into focus yet it never feels like any of it is being shoehorned in; it all feels organic to the world/universe that it inhabits. It is difficult to be more specific than that because it is really not something you want to have dictated to you. It's all about the individual journey. Definitely not light reading, either, but so, so worth it.

As with 'Androids' and many of his other novels, in 'High Castle' Dick goes beyond pure imagination that might be found in other science fiction novels. He presents you with a true "What If?" that makes you think about history, and about what the world would actually be like if events had come to pass as Dick portrays them. Reading of the status of the United States in the novel, the human condition, and particularly the titular character, you may often look at the world around you and ask yourself, What If?

The Man in the High Castle is one of the first and best "alternate history" novels ever published. Turtledove and Flint should both have altars to Philip K. Dick in their homes.
