About the Author

Neal Shusterman is the author of many novels for young adults, including Unwind, which was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Readers; The Skinjacker Trilogy; and Downsiders, which was nominated for twelve state reading awards. Seems like somewhat of a watered down/plagarism of Neil Gaimans Neverwhere, only for kids.

I'm thirteen and our teacher forced our grade to read this book in class. Yes, it does leave some thought provoking questions but I think at my age i could be reading harder books especially in class. In my opinion, the books characters are a little two-deminsonal and the story uses a lot of clichés like Lindsay's "evil" stepbrother. This book had a chance to be really great but ended up bing a just average read for for the lonely ten year old who dreams of being taken to a secret society below her feet.

Downsiders is a clever mixture of fact and fiction that captures enough of the imagination to make you wonder which is which. The author has made it easy to envision the existence of two worlds separated by layers of concrete and steel, but connected by a single strand of adolescent innocence of the only two people in the story with the ability to look beyond the surface to the heart. Those two people are Talon and Lindsey. For me, this novel is every bit as entertaining as it is thought provoking. This novel held my attention from beginning to end. I recommend it to sci-fi fans looking to explore the possibility of new worlds closer to home.
