Review:

"This photo-illustrated retelling of 'The Little Red Hen' stays faithful to the traditional plot, but pictures its lazy barnyard characters playing pool and other human games, in a Wegman-like treatment. 'One day the Little Red Hen found some grains of wheat. 'Look, look!' she clucked. 'Who will help me plant this wheat?' ' A black-spotted duck, a potbellied pig sporting a baseball cap and a sloe-eyed white cat catch some rays in the yard; each responds, 'Not I.' On harvest day, the duck, pig and cat busily play cards; as the bespectacled hen grinds the wheat and rolls the dough, they watch a pig movie ('Hairy Trotter') and play checkers with bottle caps. After the animals gamble the days away, the hen refuses to share her home cooking. South African illustrator Downard, making his debut, works in photo collage. He manipulates close-ups of an actual hen, duck, pig and cat, adding human apparel and awkwardly bending wings to resemble arms; the ambitious hen dons rubber boots and totes a shovel as she goes to plant the grain. While the story's question-and-answer format is well known, the layout fails to serve it well. The animals are pictured when the hen asks them her questions ('Who will help me make this flour into dough?'), but their 'Not I' responses appear without them; a reader has to turn back to a previous spread to see who's doing the talking. Other editions of this favorite nursery story better serve the tale of the unappreciated baker. All ages. (Mar.) " Publishers Weekly (Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information, Inc.)

About the Author

Barry Downard designed houses, played drums, and worked as an art director before drifting into fashion and advertising photography. Inspired by the storytelling possibilities of digital photograph manipulation, he developed a unique style of photo-illustration. He lives with his wife, two Border collies, cats, and a transient population of wild and not-so-wild animals (some of whom are pictured in this book) on a small farm in the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal midlands of South Africa. The Little Red Hen is his first book.

Downard's treatment of this classic fable heaps a big serving of silliness while the kids eats up it's lesson. The beauty of Downard's art is his ability to use actual photgraphs of the four animal characters and combine them with hillarious props and pose them in ridiculously common-place places and poses. He's created something that will make even the most harried bedtime story reading adult relax with laughter. Now, that's a book worthy of attention! You'll want to read it time after time, night after night beside the bed of your favorite youngish story listener. We all know how tiresome reading the same book night after night after night can be. It's made worse when the story is dull, or too long, or too simple...But when there's a book that both reader and listener not only tolerate, but really, truly enjoy, then it deserves the highest of praise. This is such a gem. It's in the good company of Dave Pilkey's KAT KONG, and DOGZILLA (CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS not withstanding).

Who's seen a real chicken riding a bike? Or a pig playing pool? Or how about a cat playing checkers? Or a duck wearing shades & soaking up the rays?

"Not I!" you say?
"Then you will" I say.
And I did!
