For those of us who have lost all faith in contemporary fiction, there's "Middlesex," proof that there's a god, or at least a poetic muse.

"Middlesex" isn't perfect, but it's head, shoulders, and waist above most other fiction from the early 2000s. And who cares if Oprah picked it? It's still cool!

Travel from Michigan to Greece; from awkward teenhood to still-somewhat-awkward adulthood; from the mind and heart of a deeply likeable and easy-to-identify with protagonist to scenes of days long past.

Perfect for outsiders everywhere, this is one of the few books from the last ten years that's likely to still be on people's shelves decades from now.

Unclear as to whether the book could 'of' an earlier decade and reread in this one, I eschewed 'The Invisible Man' and 'Sometimes a Great Notion'. These mythic tales remain unsurpassed. I chose 'Middlesex' as it is lavish, lush, and soul provoking. An immersion in a space and mind different from mine in some ways and so like it in many others. It is a wholly human tale told in a depth that transcends the brain and touches the mind.

Thoughts of this novel come to my mind again and again. I read it first when it was published in 2002, and recently came back for a second read at the end of 2009. In the meantime, I'd recommended it to countless friends who fell just as in love with this book as I had.

I believe the successful of this book lies the way in which history and creative narrative intertwine. The spines of several stories twist and intersect, blurring the line between reality and fiction.

After my second read, I see even more clearly how pertinent this story's exploration of gender and sexuality are. It holds the valuable lesson of finding comfort in one's own skin and accepting the myriad differences in the world around you.
