Publisher Comments:

The result of Rolt's careful investigation and study of verbatim reports and findings by H.M. Inspectorate of Railways, this book was the first work to record the history of British railway disasters. It covers every major accident between 1840 and 1957, and reveals the evolution of safety devices and methods which came to make the British railway carriage one of the safest ways of transport in the world. This new edition uses the 1966 revised edition — the last produced by Rolt himself — and combines this with a new selection of photographs.

If you like engineering-action stories, this book is still the best in it's class. whether you are a railfan or not, Rolt's ability to set a scene, blend engineering details, the humor and tragedy of the people involved from the lowliest station boy, to the most outstanding engineers of the day, and the chain of events that lead to each inevitable disaster is second to none. here is engineering and design wisdom learned the hard way as it so often is. there are other books about "train wrecks" but none like this. Max gives it an enthusiastic five-star rating !
