Vampires get to be in love and sell millions of books. Why shouldn't zombies get the same privileges? Breathers corrects this egregious oversight with an undead love story that manages, against all odds, to be tender and funny. And full of brains.

Publisher Comments:

Meet Andy Warner, a recently deceased everyman and newly minted zombie. Resented by his parents, abandoned by his friends, and reviled by a society that no longer considers him human, Andy is having a bit of trouble adjusting to his new existence. But all that changes when he goes to an Undead Anonymous meeting and finds kindred souls in Rita, an impossibly sexy recent suicide with a taste for the formaldehyde in cosmetic products, and Jerry, a twenty-one-year-old car crash victim with an exposed brain and a penchant for Renaissance pornography. When the group meets a rogue zombie who teaches them the joys of human flesh, things start to get messy, and Andy embarks on a journey of self-discovery that will take him from his casket, to the SPCA, to a media-driven class-action lawsuit on behalf of the rights of zombies everywhere.

Darkly funny, surprisingly touching, and gory enough to satisfy even the most discerning reader, Breathers is a romantic zombie comedy (rom-zom-com, for short) that will leave you laughing, squirming, and clamoring for more.

Review:

"Browne's black comedy debut brilliantly reinvents zombie culture for the 21st century. Andy Warner reanimates after the car accident that kills his wife, but is too mangled from his injuries to talk. He lives in his parents' wine cellar, occasionally attending a zombie support group and struggling to rejoin a society that offers the undead no rights, bans them from working and doesn't even punish those who destroy them. When Andy and his fellow zombies — notably Rita, a sexy suicide victim with a lipstick fetish, and Jerry, a Playboy-obsessed stoner — learn why they're so driven to consume human flesh, the repercussions are both tragic and hilarious. Browne neatly mixes humor and extreme violence with a surprisingly tender love story, some witty social satire and an extremely strong narrative voice." Review:

"A terrific comedy about the perils and joys of life beyond death....A zombie comedy with brains." Kirkus Reviews

"If you've never been staked down on the side of a hill and left out to rot at a research facility for human decay, then you probably wouldn't understand."
"If you've never seen someone get his arm torn out of his socket by a gang of drunk college frat boys who slapped in the face with his own hand, then you probably wouldn't understand"

These are just a few quotes from "Breathers, a zombies lament" by S.G. Browne. It is beyond hilarious. It's a world where zombies have been around since before the depression area and Breathers, their name for the living, having been pelting them with food products and using them for such things as crash test dummies since then. One of the funniest aspects of the books is that animal control is responsible for taking them in. They get put in cages like dogs and if they aren't 'claimed' after 72 hours it's off to a research facility or body farm or worse. Highly entertaining and funny!

Breathers was written to be read. Its smooth writing style allows it to be read at a fairly fast pace, and even if you have interruptions its easy to pick back up and get immersed right back into it. A trait which makes it excellent as a dark stormy night read, or a day on the beach read, even a waiting room or travel read, or just a watching the kids at the park read.
The tale is so involving and the characters so engaging, I didn't want it to end.
It had all the points a great book should, love, action, tear jerking moments and missing limbs.
Go ahead and check this book out, you'll eat it right up. Yum!
