Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Johannes Cabal, necromancer of some little infamy, returns in this riotously clever and terrifically twisted tale of murder and international intrigue.

In this genre-twisting novel, infamous necromancer Johannes Cabal, after beating the Devil and being reunited with his soul, leads us on another raucous journey in a little-known corner of the world. This time he's on the run from the local government.

Stealing the identity of a minor bureaucrat, Cabal takes passage on the Princess Hortense, a passenger aeroship that is leaving the country. The deception seems perfect, and Cabal looks forward to a quiet trip and a clean escape, until he comes face-to-face with Leonie Barrow, an enemy from the old days who could blow his cover. But when a fellow passenger throws himself to his death, or at least that is how it appears, Cabal begins to investigate out of curiosity. His minor efforts result in a vicious attempt on his own life — and then the gloves come off.

Cabal and Leonie — the only woman to ever match wits with him — reluctantly team up to discover the murderer. Before they are done, there will be more narrow escapes, involving sword fighting and newfangled flying machines. There will be massive destruction, not to mention resurrected dead...

Steampunk meets the classic Sherlockian mystery in this rip-roaring adventure where anything could happen...and does.

Synopsis:

Johannes Cabal returns in this fearfully funny and terrifically twisted tale of murder and international intrigue . . . five thousand feet off the ground.

When an attempt to steal a rare book turns sour, Johannes Cabal, a necromancer of some little infamy, finds himself in a foreign prison awaiting execution. A crafty plan — as horrific as it is cunning -- allows him to steal the identity of a government official and make his escape aboard a luxurious aeroship heading out of the country. But what should be a perfect getaway rapidly becomes complicated by the bizarre disappearance of a passenger, an attempt on Cabal's life, and an unwelcome face from the past. Trapped aboard with a killer, can even Cabal's open-razor of a mind save him?

Full of twists, turns, sword fights, archenemies, newfangled flying machines, narrow escapes, and, of course, resurrected dead, Johannes Cabal’s latest eldritch escapade is a Ruritanian romp from first to last.

Not only a great continuation of the story that delivers just as well as the previous novel in terms of story, the book itself also comes with some very interesting designs that help further describe the setting, including the zephyr they ride on.

This book reveals a lot more of the world Johannes Cabal lives in. Think steampunk Europe.

The adventures of Johannes Cabal continue, and this time there are even more twists and turns than the train tracks that came before.

While the Necromancer provided suspensful buildup and hints regarding the true agenda of the somenly cunning Johannes Cabal, this book provides its readers with the full story.

From the opening setting to the ending line, this story is as unpredictable as it is impossible to put down. I would highly reccomend it to anyone who wants to follow Johannes Cabal on another, even wilder adventure!!
