Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A best-selling core textbook for medical students taking medical biochemistry, Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry links biochemical concepts to physiology and pathophysiology, using hypothetical patient vignettes to illustrate core concepts. Completely updated to include full-color art, expanded clinical notes, and bulleted end-of-chapter summaries, the revised Third Edition helps medical students understand the importance of the patient and bridges the gap between biochemistry, physiology, and clinical care.

A new companion Website will offer the fully searchable online text, an interactive question bank with 250 multiple-choice questions, animations depicting key biochemical processes, self-contained summaries of patients described in the book, and a comprehensive list of disorders discussed in the text, with relevant Website links. An image bank, containing all the images in the text, will be available to faculty.

Book News Annotation:

For medical biochemistry students, Lieberman (molecular genetics, biochemistry and microbiology, U. of Cincinnati) and Marks (internal medicine, Temple U.) provide a text that describes biochemical concepts and physiology and pathophysiology through a patient- oriented approach. This edition has been updated to include expanded clinical notes, bulleted summaries, full-color figures, expanded coverage of metabolic syndrome and the molecular techniques and biochemistry of cancer, and measurement and stethoscope notes. There is also discussion of silencing RNA and microarray analysis. Book notes have been omitted. The book comes with an online learning package. This is an excellent text. The information is presented in a clear and clinically relevant manner. The end-of-chapter review questions are very helpful and include a thorough explanation for why correct answer was the answer selected. Only minimal errors found (other texts I've used have had major and frequent errors/typos). I will be adopting this text for my first year medical students next year. Highly recommend this text.
