Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When a twelve-year-old evil genius tries to restore his family fortune by capturing a fairy and demanding a ransom in gold, the fairies fight back with magic, technology, and a particularly nasty troll.

Review:

"Hilarious and exciting story." Denver Post

Review:

"Kids absolutely love it." Diane Sawyer, "Good Morning America"

Review:

"The fairy characters are mouthy and eccentric, but Artemis is too stiff and enigmatic to be interesting; the story bogs down when the focus is on him. The combination of choppy sentences and ornate language will appeal to some readers, although not necessarily to Harry Potter fans..." School Library Journal

Review:

"[A] battle of wits, daring, and high-tech gadgetry that keeps readers dangling till the end." Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Review:

"[A] savagely funny page-turner." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Tell readers to suspend disbelief and read this wild and wacky story for the fun of it....Characterizations and dialogue enhance a rollicking tale that will have readers rolling on the floor and eagerly anticipating the planned sequel..." Sally Estes, Booklist

Review:

"Artemis Fowl is great....A new thriller fairy tale that will grab your interest, no matter your age." Liz Smith, New York Post

Review:

"Colfer has done enormously, explosively well....Despite a brave and promising premise, Artemis Fowl is charmless. Nonetheless, young readers may thrill in seeing that the clandestine mysteries of faerie are, like all aspects of our culture, subject to decay in the light of day....What Colfer has done, and very ably, is to pitch a great movie idea. Pure gold, in fact." Gregory Maguire, The New York Times Book Review

I WAS SUPRISED BY THIS BOOK,I STARTED READING IT THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE JUST ANOTHER KIDS BOOK ABOUT MAGIC AND ELFS AND SUCH, BUT IT TURNED OUT TO BE REALLY DIFERENT,I REALLY LIKED ARTEMIS'S CHARACHTER,AND BUTLER OF COURSE. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WANTING A GOOD READ.KID'S AND ADULT'S.

The first time I read this book, I hated it. It struck me as something written by an English-major who wanted to show off all the big words he'd learned in college. I picked it up again and was able to finish it, amused by parts, bored to death by others.
I recommend FABLEHAVEN instead.
