Synopsis:

About the Author

Laura Moriarty received her master's degree from the University of Kansas and was awarded the George Bennett Fellowship for Creative Writing at Phillips Exeter Academy. She lives in Maine and is at work on her second novel.

We follow Evelyn from childhood through teen years, looking at the world and people around her. Though a small town girl with small town acquaintances, the era of the novel is set in the time of Regan's presidency and our "beef" with Russia. There are many historical references (Roe vs Wade; teaching evolution in schools,and the fallen Space Shuttle Challenger) which add layers to the book's rich texture of character and setting description. The dialogue rings true, as does Moriarty's sense of humor and compassion. Mother-daughter relationships are explored, as is the inner workings of a pre-teen and her view of herself and her peers.
I looked forward to my daily commute when I would "read" more of this great book via audiobook.

A lovely story about a young girl growing up in a not so perfect family who ultimately discovers who she is inspite of all the odds being stacked against her. She has to grow up much too fast but does so with spunk, grace and love and even clumsily at times. But, demonstrates remarkable strength inspite of all things.
A poignant, heartwarming story written with unusual insight.
