Publisher Comments:

First published in 1935, Old Jules is unquestionably Mari Sandoz's masterpiece. This portrait of her pioneer father grew out of 'the silent hours of listening behind the stove or the wood box, when it was assumed, of course, that I was asleep in bed. So it was that I heard the accounts of the hunts, . . .of the fights with the cattlemen and the sheep-men, of the tragic scarcity of women, when a man had to 'marry anything that got off the train,' of the droughts, the storms, the wind and isolation. But the most impressive stories were those told me by Old Jules himself.'"

About the Author

Helen Winter Stauffer is author of Mari Sandoz: Story Catcher of the Plains and editor of Letters of Mari Sandoz.

How many young people will ever see this book? How many young people read anymore? The flow of events in this book is a bit hard to follow at times. Perhaps it is the writing style of author. The reader must get in sync with Ms. Sondoz in an attempt to grasp her story effectively. It must have been a difficult task for Mari to write about her father, having to relive some very unpleasant memories. At times I got so angry at how Jules treated his wives and children. Like when Mari was only about three months old and crying in the middle of the night. Jules gets up from his bed and slaps little Mari until she is a quivering little mass of pain. What a beast! And this fellow was supposed to have four years of medical training? He had to know what pain he was inflicting on the baby! He didn't care! He also physically abused his wives. I noticed he didn't, one-on-one, take on a man of any size. He would talk tough if he had a rifle and some friends around him. But really must have been a coward. I wouldn't have blamed any of his wives for taking an iron skillet to Jules' head as he slept!
Mari Sandoz does give us a pretty good picture about life on the leading edge of the American frontier of her day. It was tough times to say the least. Few today would endure.
