"I fell in love with Crosby, Stills, and Nash's song 'Southern Cross' when I was fifteen. By the time I got to college, 'I'm going to sail around the world someday' was sort of my pickup line." Continue »

Publisher Comments:

Bagel has lost his lucky hat. His friend Becky helps him retrace his steps, but the story he tells her of the days adventures is far too silly to be believed . . . or is it? Coupled with zany illustrations, this whimsical tale is sure to be a favorite for any kid whose imagination sometimes runs wild. Full color.

Review:

"The underground comic aesthetic — at least the G-rated version — comes through in full force in the children's debut by acclaimed Canadian graphic novelist Dave Cooper. Bagel the dog, clearly a few biscuits short in the brains department, ropes his sensible feline friend Becky into helping him figure out how his beloved ten-gallon hat went missing. But Becky quickly loses patience as Bagel retraces his steps from a most improbable day, which includes laughing fishes, a jetpack-powered robot suit and a visit to a planet named Zorgonogon 14. 'Do you expect me to believe all that?' scolds Becky — which, of course, precedes proof that it's absolutely true. The pseudonymous Mumbly's retro-flavored compositions are packed with bug-eyed characters, amiable grotesqueries and manic detail; the attention just to surfaces shows his highly wrought style and his dexterity. The visual gags, however, can be somewhat blunted by the muted palette, which gives some pictures a curiously muddied appearance. Still, this book will be right up the alley of any kid who likes The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy or similar irreverence in any media. Ages 4-8." Bagel's Lucky Hat is a comical story about Bagel the dog and his search for his missing lucky hat. My seven-year old son grabbed this book when he saw it and devoured the book quickly from cover to cover. After his first reading, he looked up at me and said, "Mama, who ever wrote this book has A LOT of imagination!", and I concurred.

Bagel the dog and his friend Becky the cat are getting ready for bedtime when Bagel is upset to discover his lucky hat is missing. As the friends puzzle about where the hat could be, Bagel thinks back over the wild antics of the day. Becky is in disbelief as Bagel recounts stories of sailing down a river with a school of laughing fishes, flying through the skies with a flock of friendly birds, chasing his lucky hat through the underground laboratory of a mad scientist, and getting trapped in a giant space-traveling robot, and making friends with aliens from deep space. Becky doesn't believe Bagel's outlandish stories, and it's a big surprise where Bagel's lucky hat turns up.
