A very interesting and unique viewpoint on a controversial historical person. Catherine de' Medici, as a figure in history, had a public life and persona that is well-known. This book however explores the young Caterina's private life from the viewpoint of the kitchen servants in her household. I honestly had never thought about Caterina's childhood very much, as her later life brought her into such great prominence, and it was great fun to join with the author in imagining it. This author has re-created in great detail a very rich historical period and done it well. I especially enjoyed reading about the rich and famous of Renaissance Florence, the Medicis, the Strozzis, Michelangelo, Pope Clement, and others, as seen through the eyes of their servants and apprentices. If the author had done this as a piece of historical fiction only it would have been a wonderfully interesting read. But she added an extra layer of fascination with her fantasy element. While the historical situations unfold factually she opens to us the magical machinations surrounding those events as perceived and guided by the magical members of a family that work in the kitchens of the great families of Florence. This book is fun and engrossing for readers who enjoy historical fiction and gentle fantasy.
