Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Modern Chess Openings is the best and most trusted tool for serious chess players on the market. First published over a half-century ago, this is a completely revised and updated edition of the book that has been the standard English language reference on chess openings. An invaluable resource for club and tournament players, it now includes information on recent matches and the most up-to-date theory on chess openings.

Modern Chess Openings is ideal for intermediate players ready to elevate their game to the next level or International Grandmasters who want to stay on top of recent chess innovations.

Synopsis:

Why is Modern Chess Openings called "the chessplayer's bible"? Because since it was first published over a half-century ago, it has been one of the most trusted books in the chess world. Because it is the world's most current and comprehensive one-volume reference work on the chess openings. And because it has been completely revised to reflect the changes and advances made in chess over the past eight years, including major tournament matches and published theoretical works.

About the Author

Would you like to learn the major lines in Chess Openings? Do you want theory analyses about those lines? Then this tome is for you. Many of the well known and well played lines for Chess are covered in depth. And even some of the lesser known and played lines get coverage. One major glitch to this work, however, is the relatively sparse comments on the longer lines. And there are some glaring editorial errors in both the Chess charts, comments, and moves (the reason for the 4 out of 5 rating). But ardent players will no-doubt find and correct them and fully enjoy this remarkable book on Chess Openings. Highly recommended for Novices and Experts alike.

The analysis is not necessarily too deep for many lines, but usually in sufficient depth to give you the right feel for any particular opening. One minor problem for a book of this scope is that with chess theory constantly changing and new ideas being discovered, this book can't possibly reflect all the recent discoveries so some lines can become outdated before their time. But overall you can learn to play most lines with confidence as the analysis is pretty easy to digest without overwhelming you with too many variations.
