Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

Pearson collects 15 of his articles appearing between 1968 and 2001 in journals such as Modern Asian Studies and Portuguese Studies. Set in the early modern period, they describe people living on the coasts of the Indian Ocean; view Asians and Europeans on equal footing in core cultural and economic areas; and are based mostly on Portuguese sources. Topics discussed include cross-cultural contacts in the spheres of broker-foreign merchant dealings, religion, and medicine. The historian acknowledges cringing at an earlier attribution of the decline of Spanish trade in the Philippines to "a decline in the spirit of the Spanish." Original typefaces and pagination have been maintained. Pearson's affiliation is not given.
