"Bad Night." Sometimes called Portland's Poet Laureate (it would be more accurately to call him Portland's Skid Row Poet), the irascible Walt Curtis's short book "Mala Noche" is probably known to many as the basis for Gus Van Sant's film, a key movie in both the indie and gay movement. The autobiographical, loosely structured novella relates Curtis's experiences working at a convenience store, hanging out with the demimonde, and falling in love with a Mexican boy. It comes off a bit like a mix of Bukowski and Genet. This reissued version contains more stories, poems, and essays, as well as Curtis's drawings and an introduction by Van Sant. A key piece of pre-gentrified, pre-Pearl Portland writing. Warning: explicit sex ahead.
