This book is an awesome resource for people who want to be more self-sufficient/self-reliant and environmentally sound. Lots of recipes for making cleaning products, laundry soap, balms, salves and more using a lot of stuff that you likely already have at home! It also touches on starting a garden. I refer to this book all the time and I actually feel like I am doing my part to make the environment a little healthier all while saving a little money by not having to by expensive, harsh cleaning products at the store.

This book is amazingly helpful for anyone looking to live more simply. Aside from its innate usefulness, Make Your Place absolutely oozes charm. Raleigh's handwritten text and sweet illustrations are simply stunning. The cover is so gorgeous that I can't bring myself to hide this book away on the shelf. I always have it on display somewhere in my house.

Plus, Raleigh's recipes for tinctures, salves and all-natural cleaning products are easy to follow. Within days of picking up the book in-store at Powell's, I whipped up three of her cleaning product recipes and gave them as a DIY Mother's Day Gift. Needless to say, my mom adored them--so much so that she asked me to refill all of the bottles with Raleigh's concoctions again this year.

As if I weren't already a steadfast member of the author's fan club after picking up Make Your Place, Raleigh in real life is just as sweet and charming as she seems in the book. When I emailed her with a question about the best bottling methods for the cleaning products she writes about, she responded promptly with some helpful ideas. I will be giving this book as a gift to friends and family for many, many years to come.

This book is really beautiful, comprehensive, and well-written - not to mention, quite charming. I would love the content even if its text were not handwritten and adorned with fabulous illustration - but it is!

However, - you should fix your listing, because the author's last name is Briggs, not Brigg. But that is it.

"Staff Pick" by ,

Proof that good things come in small packages, Make Your Place packs a wealth of DIY know-how into a pocket-sized paperback. Hand-written and illustrated by Raleigh Briggs, this compendium of tutorials for non-toxic cleaning, natural body care, and gardening is informative, accessible, and oh so cute. And for less than $10, it's a steal.

"Review" by , "Thumbing through my copy of Raleigh Briggs's Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills looking for an anti-bacterial bleach-like cleaner, I came across her recipe for baking soda 'shampoo'....Raleigh suggests using a few teaspoons of baking soda — made into a paste with a little bit of water — and massaging it into your wet hair in the shower ...holy moley — it works!"
"Review" by , "Raleigh Briggs offers easy to use instructions for things like household cleaners, herbal salves and tinctures, how to compost and what to plant in your garden...Each recipe is detailed by adorable drawings and is accessible to even someone as spazzy as myself."
"Review" by , "I recommend using Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills by Raleigh Briggs as one of your go-to references. This hand-illustrated book offers simple, practical skills that anyone can learn and apply to everyday life....One of the features I love most about this book is its conversational and witty tone. Briggs is never condescending and instead inspires the reader to better his or her life with his simple tutorials. Briggs also urges readers to be safe and offers helpful advice for every step of the way. Even though some of the recipes call for uncommon ingredients, I constantly refer to this book when I'm looking for natural and sustainable answers for my home."
"Review" by , "From gardening to essential oils, Raleigh included it all! Not to mention the fact that the book is beautifully handwritten and illustrated. I often get my tips from the internet, but Raleigh's book is wonderful to leave in the kitchen or bathroom as an instant recipe book and guide. A definite must-have starting guide for anyone interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle."
"Review" by , “A nifty little book filled with DIY health and home remedies for those who may be looking to avoid spending a fortune at the supermarket and/or be more environmentally friendly. Plenty of insightful tips on first aid, body care, home and gardening, most of which I can see myself using in the future (especially when I start my garden or begin taking better care of myself, whichever happens first). This book reads like a helpful journal written by a friendly and knowledgeable guy, who I envisioned having dreads and a big beard (my apologies to Raleigh Briggs if this is not at all what you actually look like). Each page is meant to look handwritten, with clever illustrations accompanying each topic. One chapter I found to be of particular interest explained what different herbs can do for your mental and physical health. For example, licorice root can help cure hypothyroidic depression. I immediately stocked up on Twizzlers in case I ever get hypothyroidically depressed. An infinitely interesting read that could be beneficial to the reader, and, on a somewhat larger scale, the planet.”
"Synopsis" by , Raleigh Briggs collects her zines, illustrations, and thoughts around what it is that makes a great DIY household — homemade cleaning solvents that aren't made from poison, herbs that will heal you, and how to setup a great garden. These tips and tricks fill in the gaps for those of us longing to live this lifestyle but lacking the necessary know-how.
