Book News Annotation:

US journalist Erlich has written previous books about hidden US policy regarding the Middle East and Iraq. On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the triumph of the revolution in Cuba, and in the wake of Fidel's retirement, he visited Havana. He discusses the state of relations between the island nation and its gigantic neighbor to the north from the perspective of Cuba, Washington, and Miami, and places it in the context of its long history. His topics include the origins of the Cuba lobby, the US embargo, Cuba's controversial domestic and foreign policies, organic farms, Jewish jokes, the Buena Vista Social Club, women, racism, and prospects for change. Synopsis:

Covering popular culture, the economy, and Cuban politics, veteran reporter Reese Erlich combines original photography with on-the-ground reporting from Havana and Miami. He explores Cuba's strained history with the US, the power of the Cuba Lobby and offers a fresh look at the island nation nearly 50 years after their historic Revolution to create a tableau that is at once moving and informative. This will be the stand-out book about Cuba during the media coverage of the anniversary. It will lay out the options and challenges facing the next American president. He concludes with prospects for policy change following the death of Fidel Castro.

It's rare that we get to read such a thoughtful and nuanced discussion of the problems of building socialism, the difficult choices that have to be made and the complicated and often unanticipated consequences that result. Without minimizing their seriousness and the mixed track record of the Cuban revolution in dealing with them, Erlich shows that they can in fact be confronted without the kind of ugly, wrenching, and disruptive conflicts they provoked in China.
