A Fun Historical Adventure!

This book has all of the elements of a rousing story including mystery, murder, marshall arts, and a working man's (and working woman's) hero. The best part is that it is based on historical fact and gives a gritty insight into Portland, Oregon's not too distant past of the last 100 years or so.

S.L. Stoner has written a historical mystery that doesn’t have to choose between historical accuracy and telling a good story. Her lively characters bring the story to life as well as representing typical depictions of the people who came to the Northwest in order to make their mark at the turn of the last century. Sage Adair is a secret operative of the labor unions, working in Oregon just years after the Western Federation of Miners called for a strike in Idaho. He finds Oregon in the grip of big interests who want to trade and control timber land for their own gain. On his way to solving a brutal murder of a young boy who had rode the rails to find an education in Portland, Sage is helped by a Mennonite farmer, works hard and enjoys the camaraderie of a timber camp, witnesses the prejudice against Portland’s small black community, is aided by his Chinese cook (who is also a Tai Chi master), and visits his secret paramour, a madame, whose house caters to the elite; the very men responsible for many of the wrongs Sage has to face.
From the graphic opening sequence to the resolution of the murder, the reader is treated to a stream of people, anyone of whom, we would like to delve deeper into their lives. As this is the first in a series, I look forward to getting a glimpse of the Northwest in the early 20th century.
