This charming middle reader chapter mystery book about horses will captivate both parent and child alike. The humane theme throughout the mystery is interwoven with informative facts about the different breeds of horses, their temperaments, personalities and quirks. This young author’s sincere love for horses is evidenced from the very first page through the last. The well-done illustrations and profiles of the character horses in the back of the book are a wonderful touch. I highly recommend this book and commend the author for donating all the proceeds from the sale of this book to charities that help horses.

Found this book while searching for horse mysteries for my two middle reader children, one boy and one girl. Both absolutely loved the book, and my daughter expecially loved the illustrated epilogue of all the horses in the back of the book which describes each horse in satisfying detail and their ultimate fates. There are delightful and inspiring suprises throughout and enough horse detail for the most avid horse lover. I think this book is mosted suited for ages 8 - 12, as far as the reading level goes, however it has so much more to offer that older readers and adults will also be delighted with it.

This was my favorite book of 2010! It is charmingly written and exquisitely illustrated. The humane theme and author's love of horses is delightful and inspiring--a "must have" for all young horse enthusiasts. I eagerly await the next book in the Charity Book Series by this talented young Oregon author and welcome such a refreshing, entertaining mystery alternative to all of the overly sensationalized and sexualized vampire series being marketed to our young readers today.

It is a rare and special delight to discover a novel as gripping in plot as it is meaningful in message. Such is the case with Mystery at Silver Key Stables, Book One in the new Charity Book Series®. Even more delightful is that this is the debut novel of Alexandra Joy Gritta, an extremely talented Oregon teen writer. The heroine of this exciting and beautifully crafted mystery, young Kelly Normand, moves from Big Sky country in Montana to the rain-soaked state of Oregon. Isolated and lonely in a new school where she struggles unsuccessfully to make friends, Kelly finds comfort and connection with the horses she finds at Silver Key Stables, bonding instantly with a gentle mare who seems to understand her loneliness. Kelly also develops a dangerous fascination with a wild black stallion living on an adjacent mustang reserve: her terrifying introduction to him nearly costing her life. When a complex chain of events pulls Kelly inadvertently into the dark, organized underworld of horse theft, the lives of many, horse and human alike, will never be the same again. This charming mystery, exquisitely illustrated by equine artist Delia was nominated for the prestigious 2009 ASPCA Henry Bergh Children's Book Award. It has garnered supportive reviews across the equestrian world, ranging from small horse rescue organizations in the northwest to the President and CEO of the United States Equestrian Federation in Kentucky. A special message from Debi Metcalfe, founder of Stolen Horse International, also offers a particularly poignant endorsement for the book. Written for ages 8 -14, this breakout novel has a timeless and humane message that is appropriate for any age. Proceeds are donated to charitable organizations that help rescue and provide safe habitats for horses.
