Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Zombie Survival Guide is your key to survival against the hordes of undead who may be stalking you right now. Fully illustrated and exhaustively comprehensive, this book covers everything you need to know, including how to understand zombie physiology and behavior, the most effective defense tactics and weaponry, ways to outfit your home for a long siege, and how to survive and adapt in any territory or terrain.

In the tradition of Bored of the Rings, O.J.'s Legal Pad, and The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, this book is a dead-on parody of wilderness and survival manuals like the SAS guides that sell millions of copies, and it will appeal as much to readers of The Onion as it will to fans of science fiction novels and horror films. Max Brooks captures the tone of these publications with perfect pitch, lacing his life-or-death advice with sarcastic, ironic, and very funny comments about the relentless power and persistence of zombies and the vulnerability of ordinary humans.

Review:

"Some of the book's more amusing aspects are the laughable analyses Brooks proposes on all aspects of zombiehood, and the specificity with which he enumerates the necessary actions for survival." Publishers Weekly

I don't know about you, but I would like to be every bit prepared when the dead rise. This book is the only thing that will tell you exactly how to do it, the right way! I own this book, have read it cover to cover, and I always have it in my suitcase when i go on a trip! This book is absolutely amazing! I would recomend it to anyone who is afraid of being eaten alive!

I really wanted to love this book. I won't say that I hated it, not at all, it just didn't excite me as much as the premise of the book did.
Sadly, this book doesn't live up to the idea of a survival guide for a world being taken over by zombies.
It really surprised me that I didn't enjoy it more -- I think I'm a target audience for it. As a fan of horror novels, zombie movies, dark humor, and characters with the will and knowledge to survive against all odds, I couldn't wait to buy and read it.
Unfortunately, in the end, I was surprised to find this book a little on the dull side. Despite chapters on the tools to defend and protect yourself and how to use them when confronted by zombies, and perhaps more importantly, how to escape from them, it's not as exciting a book as it could be.
Even more surprising, I didn't find it to be humorous, even though it's labeled as humor and found in that section of most bookstores.
My recommendation? If you're looking for a combination of horror, action, and touches of humor, read the novel that followed this guide -- "World War Z" by Max Brooks.
